Lugano school

The competition brief called for the design of a new educational complex in Lugano, Switzerland. The new facilities would replace a dated elementary school building whilst preserving an existing kindergarten designed by Aurelio Galfetti in 1972. The new programme consisted of an elementary and high-school along with additional kindergarten & pre-school facilities plus an indoor gymnasium. The conceptual proposal focused on the site’s relationship to the nearby mountain peaks of mt. Boglia & mt. Bre. The new buildings were positioned on site so as to create two piazza’s framing views towards the peaks. The proposed architectural language was deliberately conservative  with the use of simple forms and materials in keeping with typical Swiss architectural  aesthetic.
